Threaded fasteners

For assemblies that need to be removed or adjusted in service, standard or engineered threaded fasteners remain a reliable choice. They offer versatility across materials and joint types, and can be supplied in a variety of sizes, thread forms, and finishes to suit different operating environments.

Self-clinching studs
Self-clinching studs press into a pre-punched hole and lock mechanically, creating a robust, low-profile fixing with no heat required. They’re ideal where you want a clean finish and minimal backside protrusion, as long as the sheet is ductile and meets the minimum thickness for the stud type.

Capacitor-discharge (CD) studs
CD studs enable rapid attachment on thin sheets with minimal heat and little to no mark-through on the visible face, making them useful for finished panels and consumer products. Surface preparation is important for consistency.

Our New Optical Sorting Machine

We are delighted to announce we have recently taken in delivery of a latest, state of-the-art sorting machine!

This is our most advanced optical sorter - having four cameras and an Eddy current checking station which can be used for comparative testing; ensuring parts are to the correct heat treatment specification (Property class).

As our sales of threaded parts in general continue to increase, with clinch studs in particular, we wanted to provide customers with a greater level of security regarding the products property class - rather than simply supplying a second-party heat treatment certificate.

The cameras not only check for contamination and dimensional inaccuracies, but also incorrect aesthetic elements such as misshapen heads, clinch ring defects, and colour. As well as lettering and other non-dimensional problems.

The parts which pass the camera and Eddy current scrutiny are fed directly into the dispatch boxes ready for shipment to the customer. This ensures no post-sort contamination. The combination of these technologies ensure we move nearer to our goal of defect-free products, and to build upon our already impressive quality record.

We are pleased to announce that we can confirm we have complied with the Government’s guidance on managing the risk of COVID-19 within the workplace, as well as outside the workplace. Recent reports show that UK car production has fallen to its lowest output since 2009, with production down by 41%. The automotive sector ended 2021 on a high with general UK manufacturing on the rise but issues have surfaced that indicate that businesses are still working towards recovery.

Addressing Chip Shortages

The predominant obstacle car manufacturers have stumbled across is the global shortage of computer chips. This issue has been addressed across the world since 2020 and is a result of the need for semiconductors outweighing the supply. A snowball effect has been attributed to this shortage with factors such as Covid-19, trade issues and weather being highlighted.

There are signs however that the chip shortage will ease towards the end of 2022 with major producers such as South Korea receiving government assistance and the U.S seeking to build their own manufacturing plants. Although these solutions will take time, Sector leaders remain hopeful that with these efforts lead times will be reduced. However another recent issue is that the Ukrainian conflict has significantly reduced the supply of Neon gas used to etch chip boards. This will further exacerbate recovery for the automotive industry.

More than a quarter of vehicles produced in February were electric vehicles, with the consumer need for EVs ever-increasing. The electric vehicle revolution has been supercharged by the Prime Minister as new homes, supermarkets, workplaces and more will be required to install electric vehicle charge points.

The government also announced the ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2030 as part of their green initiatives. With the increase in incentives and investment for electric vehicle use, it is predicted that this will attribute to growth in car production over the coming years.

Material

CAD Design

In this age of high tech, computer based design. A growing problem is becoming obvious to us here at Clevedon. As you know, whilst we do some very clever cold forgings and self-piercing products, our main business is based on the humble rivet. Solid Semi-Tubular and Fully tubular rivets. Some of you reading this blog may not even know what these products are or will confuse them with pop or other blind rivets

Therein lies one of the problems with modern design techniques. A confluence of two factors, demise of old style apprenticeships where some of our best engineering talent learned their trade and the rise of the computer savvy, Ipad literate younger generation, many young designers have not been taught some of the most basic, fundamental engineering techniques.

This is not their fault, most CAD systems are great at producing designs drawings. Unfortunately, only certain techniques are included in the various wizards and look ups which mean that only certain outcomes will be produced.

Quite often these unintentionally, pre-defined outcomes are very difficult to productionise and more importantly very costly to manufacture.

We have had experience of being told by very well meaning designers that our suggested fixing proposal will not work because their Finite Element Analysis (FEA)testing show that the rivet will fail at a particular load. This despite that fact that in our long history (we began business in 1939), we have never encountered a failure mode of the type the FEA predicted would happen. To prove the point, we undertook practical testing to discover what happens in actual practice. The rivet did not fail.

Drawings are sent to us where in order to realise the designers dream, the product needs to be turned, milled, drilled, ground etc. Each operation results in expensive individual set up and run times and thereby the final product is very costly to manufacture, at which point some very innovative designs are dropped because they do not make economic sense to peruse.

Powder printed samples are very good straight off the CAD system, but are incapable of predicting that the whole project will fail due to the lack of basic engineering input at the beginning. The old adage rubbish in, rubbish out, still holds true. All of these very sophisticated, technologically advanced CAD and FEA systems all have the same fundamental, inherent weaknesses and results in the waste of large amounts of time, money and company resources, to say nothing of the potentially game changing design concepts that never come to fruition.

Here at Clevedon (the parent of Clevtec) we do not claim to have all the answers but we are very good basic engineers. Having had to fight against overseas competition that has destroyed many good UK engineering companies we do have a very good track record in providing low cost, practical, innovative solutions to seemingly intractable design issues.

For the above reasons we have introduced a Design Support Agreement to work with designers to put some of the practical elements back into the design process that dont come straight out of the can. We have found this has the most beneficial effect when we are involved early on in the design cycle but have also been able to re-engineer designs that have got into difficulty (usually cost difficulties)

The Advantages of Cold Forged Fasteners

Cold forging is a metal working process that is carried out at or near room temperature by material in wire form which is then cut off and fed into a die or multiple dies. The result is a component where the net shape is formed without any scrap, unlike parts which are turned. As they are formed and not cut, the grain flow is simply re-directed resulting in a much higher strength product. Cold forged fasteners are trusted in many industries such as automotive, aerospace and agricultural across the globe.

So, when considering which fasteners to use for any scale of project, here are five substantial reasons why cold forged fasteners are an attractive option:

1. Increased Strength

Due to the product being formed and not cut, the grain flow simply moves in the die or dies to produce the net shape of the finished product, which is inherently stronger than that produced by other processes such as machining. This is a much more ecologically acceptable production method as the finished part is produced without any swarf scrap material.

2. High Speed Production/Lower Cost

Typical production rates run at 100/300 parts per minute ensuring high volume parts can be produced very economically. This highspeed manufacturing process is further enhanced by computer-controlled processers which enable parts to be produced with no human supervision, an example of lights-out manufacturing.

3. Wide Range of Products

As well as basic fasteners such as solid and semi tubular rivets, cold forging enables many specials to be produced, significantly reducing the equivalent costs of products produced by other manufacturing processes. Self-piercing rivets which are rivets not requiring a hole are fast becoming the replacement to spot welding as they are both stronger and much more eco-friendly due to the lack of head and fumes. Multi die machines enable specials to be made and of course cold forging provides the blanks for threaded products of which there are many variations, from screws and bolts to clinch studs.

4. Reduced Carbon Footprint

Among forging processes, cold forging is often considered the most eco-friendly option. During cold forging, the desired shape is formed to its net or near net shape which in turn reduces unnecessary waste. Energy consumption is also lower in comparison to other methods such as hot forging or waste such as swarf, which means that businesses using cold forged fasteners are contributing towards sustainable manufacturing.

A Spotlight On Self Piercing Rivets

Self piercing riveting (SPR) offers a quick, single-step fastening process used to join sheet materials such as steels. The process typically uses a semi-tubular rivet to clinch the sheets as it drives into them. The result is a mechanical interlock between similar or dissimilar materials which serves as a strong joint.

To produce the rivet, sheets are clamped between a die and holder which is then put through a press tool that drives the rivet through the sheets. In doing so, the lower sheet expands into the die shape creating the joint

Top Considerations When Selecting Fastener Finishes

Finishes such as coating and plating are important features of any fastener, which is why the same amount of detail that is given to design should be reciprocated when selecting a finish. To ensure that your fastener and its application are as effective as possible, here are a number of factors to consider when it comes to finishes:

Is safety hindered or improved?

The safety of a joint should never be compromised and choosing the incorrect finish for your application can be detrimental in terms of strength and brittleness. When finishes such as plating are applied, it improves the durability of the base material through the added layer of metal coat. However, environmental factors such as weather, temperatures and any possible chemical contaminants that may increase the risks of a fastener failing and affecting a joint should be addressed.

Is corrosion and wear prevention in place?

Corrosion protection is a necessary part of applying finishes as it helps prevent the base metal from deteriorating. Uniform corrosion can occur when a fastener is inefficiently coated, leading to rust that renders the part unusable. Therefore, the correct coating can go a long way in preventing uniform corrosion and there are many coatings available for particular conditions. For example, zinc in humid environments or hot dip galvanising in harsher, outdoor environments.

Is the friction control adequate?

Maintaining a consistent and reliable joint friction value should be taken into account as coatings can affect the clamping load. Most commonly available finishes have friction values which are beneficial to consider for a coefficient of friction expected and stable. While often forgotten, friction control is a factor that should not be overlooked.

Will there be any assembly issues?

While they are often applied thinly there is always the risk that excess coating materials can gather in recesses and threads which can affect dimensions. Recess fill is particularly troublesome when it comes to smaller fasteners and although these faults can be due to a design flaw, the finishing process should also be considered. To prevent any issues when it comes to assembly, opt for a suitable coating for your fastener size and consider the number of coating layers needed.

I looked at various publications and went to a number of seminars on the subject. Most were by their nature, generalisations, many were purely academic exercises which bore no resemblance to the real world and I gained no new insights to how we may improve our productivity.

5 Ways To Prevent Thread Galling

Galling is a problem that can occur during a fastener installation, when two surfaces seize together due to the pressure and friction build up. During this process, protective oxides are worn away and cause materials to clog the thread; the increase in pressure in turn leads to the fastener becoming stuck. Once this occurs it is highly difficult to remove the component without cutting the fastener.

There are numerous reasons as to why galling can happen, but luckily there are also some easy steps you can take to avoid this problem.

1. Slow Down Installation

Taking a slower approach during installation is highly beneficial as it reduces higher temperatures and in turn friction. With friction being a major culprit in galling, it’s a good idea to regulate temperature through a slower installation. You can also achieve this through the use of hand powered tools where possible.

2. Use a Lubricant

Through the use of a lubricant, you can protect threads either by applying them during or before assembly. There are numerous anti-seize options on the market which you can purchase to assist with this.

However do bear in mind that this lubricant must compliment your installation. For example if it is in a marine environment, then the accompanying lubricant must be compatible.

3. Avoid Damaged Threads

Defective or unclean fasteners can increase friction during installation, which leads to a higher likelihood of galling. Before you undergo any assembly work, you should regularly check the fasteners to guarantee there is no visible damage or debris. Plus, purchasing high quality fasteners in the first place can help avoid replacement costs in the long-term.

4. Combine Different Materials

Galling commonly occurs between two components of the same material, so for this reason it is advisable to choose different materials or even varying hardness to reduce the likelihood of issues.

Although stainless steel bolts and nuts are known to be susceptible to galling, you can cancel this out by using a different grade of stainless steel. Don’t forget to consider corrosion compatibility when choosing your combination of materials.

5. Opt for Cold Forged Components

Cold forged fasteners are manufactured for strength and their composition also helps to reduce galling. When threads are cut, they can establish weaknesses due to material grain lines being severed. As cold forged products are formed and not cut, they can diminish this possibility.

Choosing The Incorrect Grade Or Material

Selecting the optimal grade and material for your application is essential for a long-lasting result. Before placing your fastener order be sure to check that:

- The grade is strong enough for your application

- The material fits the required purpose

- The fastener will be able to withstand heat or cold where appropriate

Weld Bolts & CD Studs

Projection Weld Bolts and Studs are available with a range of head styles, with either weld pipes or an annular weld ring positioned either under the head, or on top of the head. They are available in standard Mild Steels or Carbon Steels with Boron suitably heat treated for higher tensile requirements.

Weld bolts are usually used in sheet material to provide secure fastenings in applications where access is only available from one side. They are used mainly in the automotive industry for light, or heavy-duty applications. Discover their stock sizes, specials, and packing quantity here.

Clinch Studs

The self-clinching stud is a threaded fastener, or plain pin, which incorporates a specially formed platform and combined locking ring under the head. They are designed to provide high torque and push out resistant fixing.

Each of our parts are controlled to relevant British Standards (BS), ensuring that manufacturing tolerances and product dimension prerequisites are met.

While we do supply fasteners to many British businesses, our capabilities don’t stop there. We also supply components to OEMs and distributors in 33 countries across the globe. Through this experience, we are also able to supply, and quality check our products against any regional conditions.

We utilise a state-of-the-art optical sorting machine which uses camera technology and comparative testing to provide customers with the ultimate assurance. Our cameras check for potential contaminations along with any dimensional inaccuracies, to guarantee that each order is to the correct Property Class.

It doesn’t end there however, we also scrutinise each part in the search for any incorrect aesthetic elements such as misshapen heads or wrong colours. Once all parts have passed this checking procedure, they’re then fed directly into dispatch boxes ready for shipment, adding another level of protection against contamination.

A brief History of…..Clevedon

Clevedon Fasteners — 20/03/2019

This is the History of Clevedon Fasteners Ltd, a sunset business which according to conventional wisdom should have passed into history long ago, but as you will see, the business is far from conventional and is alive and thriving.

Clevedon Fasteners Ltd started life as Clevedon Rivets and Tools in 1939, it took its name from the road in which it was established, Clevedon Road, Balsall Heath, Birmingham.

The company was founded by colleagues Bertram (Bert) Godwin and Frederick (Fred) Wood. In those days, all cold heading tooling was made from tool steel. Bert and Fred saw an opportunity as they believed that Carbide would provide tooling with much greater tool life.

The advent of the war in September 1939 proved another step in the development of Clevedon as due to their tooling prowess and knowledge of aluminium alloy rivets, they were awarded the plumb products by the War Ministry when they rationalised the UK manufacturing for the war effort.

Reasons To Be Cheerful?

I, Steve Hardeman, am the CEO of Clevedon Fasteners, an SME based in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands which manufactures fasteners. Back in June 2021 I wrote a blog on my company website suggesting that we were about to be hit by the inflation tsunami we have all subsequently suffered from.

All of us in business have been through a pretty traumatic time in the last 4 years. The Covid pandemic, shut downs, social distancing, re-starts, broken supply chains, inflation spikes, energy increases, lack of employees, interest rate hikes and I could go on with more.

The commentariat are suggesting a recession would be a good thing?

So, time for some good news?

Firstly, well done to all the workers, business owners, companies and organisations that have navigated through this tumultuous time. You are all to be congratulated for surviving and hopefully flourishing. We are all so busy doing our “day job” that we don’t stand back and realise what we have cumulatively achieved.

Secondly, whilst we are not yet out of the woods, in my opinion, the worst is over.

Supply chains have recovered to pre-pandemic levels, shipping and container costs are almost back to normal and raw material shortages are in the main resolved. Even microchip shortages have eased.

A figure crucial to all businesses is the annual inflation rate of producer input price (the rate of change of cost of inputs). In June 2023 this fell by 2.7%, from a peak increase of 24.4% in June 2022.

Most economic commentators are predicting that the next interest rate rise, if it happens at all will be the last before they start to fall. Companies that have managed to carry the current interest rate burden will see it fall over the next few months with its obvious effect on cash availability.

Wages have also been contained to an average 7.1% in the private sector. (Source: Statista July 2023, public sector averaged 5.9%)

Companies that have managed to track inflation (Peak: 11.1% June 2022) with price increases will see their margins increase in 2024. (Source: BDO/Make UK)

In the Q2 2023 report Make UK states:

“Businesses now expect this modest level of growth to continue into Q3 2023 as falling energy prices should enable businesses to produce more efficiently and result in a lower rate of inflation too.”

In my own business we have seen an uptick in enquiries and orders from customers we haven’t dealt with for over 10 years and new customers from the UK, Europe and US asking us to quote on work previously supplied to them by companies in Asia. This move towards re-shoring or near shoring is only anecdotal but appears to be a trend which is very welcome.

I recognise that we all still have issues have to face, particularly SMEs but the worst is over in my opinion and this is in spite of, not because of, government action.

It's A Riveting World

Here at Clevedon Fasteners, we pride ourselves on the wide range of high-quality rivets we manufacture and provide our customers. From solid rivets, and clutch disk rivets, to semi tubular and self-piercing rivets – our warehouses are riveting in rivets! Below, we have outlined what each of these rivets are, as well as their applications and how you can order them for your next project.

Solid Rivets

Solid rivets can be used in many applications, making it one of the most popular rivets within the industry. Setting the rivet is achieved by passing the rivet through the material to be fixed, and then either deforming the end of the shank, or fitting a non-return washer – such as a "starlock”.

There are variations of head forms available, which you can see in the diagram below.

Semi Tubular Rivets

Semi tubular rivets are similar to solid rivets, however they are set by deforming the hole formed in the end of the shank of the rivet. This can be done by using a hand-held punch, or in high volume applications – fully automatically using a purpose-built riveting machine.

The correct specification of the rivet is the key to a successful application. We have included the main dimensions below, which will give you a guide to specifying the length of the rivet.

The self-piercing rivet is probably the most exciting development in riveting for many years… a rivet which does not need a hole! We are pleased to announce the commissioning of our 15^th Salvi cold heading machine. Our latest investment is part of our continued programme to expand our capacity to deal with the growth in our export order book.

Clevedon Fasteners manufacture 24m parts per month in our two production facilities in Birmingham. We manufacture solid, semi tubular and self-piercing rivets, as well as clinch studs, CD studs, weld bolts, plastic thread screws and a wide range of specialised cold forgings.

Clevedons largest export market is the Far East - check your calendar, this is not the 1^st of April!

We supply many OEMs and distributors in the UK and worldwide, with high quality, competitively priced products. In the companys 79 year history, we have been able to help and advise our customers on new projects and cost saving methods which has given us an unprecedented technical capability. This together with world class customer service (if we dont supply, big companies stop working, and we cant allow that to happen) has meant that our order book continues to increase.

New Design Concept: Common Sense

We are humble Cold Forgers who spend our days making things, real world products. Therefore, with our many years of experience it enables us to quickly grasp the purpose of the drawings we are asked to quote on (the design envelope) and we then look at the drawings from a manufacturing point of view.

However, we have tried a different approach. We take the design concept envelope and de-construct it. Working closely with the original designers, we propose alternative strategies to provide the same (or better in many cases) performance but within the cost parameters the product must meet.

2021 - Keep Moving Forward

Why Stockholding is Becoming a Customer Service Issue

In fastener supply, customer service has traditionally been judged on clear communication, competitive pricing and reliable delivery. However, in 2026, another factor is becoming increasingly important: stockholding.

For manufacturers, contractors, engineers and maintenance teams, the ability to access the right fasteners at the right time is no longer just a convenience. It can directly affect production schedules, repair times, project deadlines and day-to-day operational efficiency.

A Perfect Storm: A Manufacturing Pandemic

Many people are talking about a return to the “new normal”, however, in terms of business – this is a very scary place. It is becoming a well-used phrase, but as we come out the other side of the pandemic, businesses large and small are being buffeted by the outlying winds of a “perfect storm”.

Numerous UK businesses took advantage of a number of government schemes designed to help them through the pandemic. Bounce Back Loans, CBILS, BBILS, and many others, have added billions to UK pls’s balance sheet. Of course, these loans must be paid back. The support provided by the government was predicted on very low interest rates, however, all support measures do not have fixed interest rates – they are variable. This means that if the Bank of England interest rate increases, so do the repayment schedules.

Re-shore From Asia

Due to the pandemic, and other issues, things that we took for granted have changed significantly. UK manufacturing has been progressively hollowed out by governments of all political hues, therefore companies have off-shored, predominantly to Asia, for their consumer and business-to-business products. The supply chains supporting this business model have been developed and honed into a very slick, low-cost operation resulting in these products being readily available.

As our economies recover from the pandemic, the global demand for sea-freighted product has escalated to the extent that more than 99% of the world’s fleet of container vessels are in operation or under repair; meaning there is no spare capacity. Therefore, costs to customers have increased by thousands.

Here at Clevedon Fasteners, we must compete with imports brought in by our competitors from Asia, where most fasteners used in all sorts of manufacturing in the UK and worldwide come from. In addition to cost increases, the actual time from shipment to arrival has increased significantly and has been exacerbated in recent months due to the problems in the Suez Canal.

The Unseen Struggle

As we started to unlock across the world, steel manufacturing plants have not been able to keep up with the demand, and costs of raw materials for steelmaking have also increased massively. The result is steel shortages worldwide, which means prices go up – and they have at an unprecedented rate.

Broken Supply Chains

Broken supply chains are going to have to make companies and governments think very carefully about the strategic position of manufacturing in the UK and its value, as opposed to its cost. When the full effect of inflationary pressures start hitting businesses, which are already hobbled by the loans they have taken out in order to survive the pandemic, they will be faced with increasing costs of financing existing loans and the new impossibility of getting new ones.

The UK government’s decision to remove the trade credit insurance safety at the end of June also further compromises businesses abilities to fight back against the issues we are facing in the manufacturing industry.

Why Do Summer Conditions Matter?

When the sun makes an appearance, heat and humidity aren’t far behind. These two factors are the perfect mix to create thriving corrosion.

When moisture and heat combine, oxidation is accelerated, especially in unprotected metals. The surface of a fastener will react and begin to form iron oxide – better known as rust. This corrosion will weaken the fastener and cause flaking, pitting, or total failure over time.

Does This Affect My Facility?

Corrosion is most problematic in industries with outdoor exposure or fluctuating temperatures. The most common examples include marine equipment, outdoor furniture, HVAC units, agricultural machinery, and summer construction projects.

For Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), ensuring the longevity and reliability of your products is crucial, and fasteners play a key role in maintaining structural integrity. Corrosion in fasteners can lead to product failure, increased maintenance costs and even reputational damage.

However by strategically protecting your components, you can significantly reduce the risk of rust and deterioration.

Below are 5 essential tips to help you prevent corrosion in your fasteners and ensure long-term performance.

Understand Your Environment

The first step in preventing corrosion in your fasteners is understanding what is causing them to deteriorate. By assessing the environment your components will be in, you can ensure you’re taking steps to reduce the risks. This includes determining whether your part will be exposed to moisture, humidity, extreme temperatures or chemicals.

As a fastener is exposed to these factors, oxidation soon follows which leads to rust and the weakening of your fasteners. By identifying the factors that contribute to the deterioration of your products, you can then select the right materials and protective measures.

Choose The Right Materials

To avoid corrosion, choosing the correct material for your parts is the first line of defence. This includes choosing materials that naturally resist rust like stainless steel, aluminium or copper.

Stainless steel in particular is corrosion resistant as it contains at least 10.5% chromium. When exposed to oxygen, chromium reacts with it to form a thin layer of chromium oxide which is passive and self-repairing. This protective layer is important in preventing rust from triggering.

Thoughtful engineering can play a crucial role in preventing rust in the first instance by minimising the chances of corrosion developing.

Design features to consider include reducing water traps such as crevices, sharp angles or overlapping surfaces. You may also consider using domed heads to allow water to run off more easily. Ensuring a correct fit is important too, as unnecessary movement can increase mechanical wear.

We Are Not Out Of The Woods: Inflation Update

I wrote a blog on my company website on the 23rd of June 2021, outlining my fears regarding inflation.

At the time the Bank of England and the mainstream media were reporting: "Throughout our sample period, this longer-term measure of inflation expectations is well-anchored at around 2.5%, only rising modestly from 2.3% in the beginning of 2021 to 2.65% on June 17, 2022”

Clearly, that didn’t age well.

All joking apart, it points to the massive disconnect between the "ivory tower”, predominantly academically based economic modelling used by the Treasury and more importantly the Bank of England (which has responsibility for the control of inflation) and reality.

If a humble rivet manufacturer could see the impending storm that was about to engulf businesses already weakened by lockdowns due to the Pandemic and whose balance sheets were hobbled by the need to pay back CBILS, bounce back loans etc, then why couldn’t the clever folk in charge of monetary policy and inflation control?

The answer is relatively simple, this is the "wrong” kind of inflation. Much is spoken in the media about the similarities between the present cost of living crisis and that experienced in the 1970s. As someone who had to navigate those times, this inflation spike is nothing like that experienced 50 years ago.

The inflation growth in the ‘70s was caused by a wage spiral due mainly to the power of very large unions (53% of all employees were union members in 1975). The march towards Globalisation had hardly started and many large industries have since disappeared.

6.5m people were employed in manufacturing in 1975 (it is now 2.7m). Railways, telephones, gas electricity and water were in public ownership and secondary picketing was legal. This led to a stranglehold on UKPlc, resulting in the "Winter of Discontent” in 1978-1979. Some suggest the genesis of this was the decision by the Ford Motor Company in the UK agreeing a 17% pay increase, 5% over the government’s 12% limit. This caused a tsunami of similar wage claims, resulting in 25% inflation rates.

The classical reaction by the Bank of England was to raise interest rates which topped out at 17%! Few people remember that at the same time the world was hit by the oil price shock due to the West’s backing of the Yom Kippur War, which hit the global economy hard. This is the only similarity between the issues we face today and those of the past.

Also, more worryingly for us all in business, the way inflation was brought under control. The purpose of very high-interest rates is to "stamp out inflation”. This is political speak for the recession of Darwinian proportions. Whilst it cured the problem, in the case of many businesses and even industries it killed the patient in the process.

This time inflation is "different”. Unlike the 1970s it is not wage-led; it is input-led. A combination of lockdown re-starts, broken supply chains and latterly the war in Ukraine, severely restricted the supply of raw materials and goods resulting in shortages. These were further fuelled by speculators shorting commodities, resulting in increases across the board.

The current surge in pay demands is the result, not the cause, of the present inflation rate - though they will obviously add to it.

The headline inflation rate in June 2022 was 9.4% - this is the CPI (Consumer price index). The other measure usually referred to is the RPI (Retail price index) which was 11.8% - this information is mainly for use in consumer markets. It is of little value to manufacturers who look incredulously at these figures, knowing their lived experience indicates much higher inflation figures.

Of more use to manufacturers are the Producer Output (factory gate) Prices, which are currently 16.5%. More importantly in terms of our businesses is the Producer Input Prices which in June were 22.4%!

Hopes of an early amelioration of this crisis is simply wrong.

The BofE increasing interest rates to "stamp out” this type of inflation is simply an act of self-harm to UKPlc. It is akin to the UK adopting net zero when their major industrial competitors are blithely carrying on as before as this is not a "sick man of Europe” issue (the term the UK used to be called in the 1970s for younger readers) i.e. a UK issue, it is a global issue.

There is a better way

Out of adversity comes opportunity. In my business, when we hit a downturn, we have a choice: cut costs, a euphemism for cutting people, which in any well-run business is difficult, or trade your way out of the problem.

In government terms this would equate to:

- Possibly even reducing interest rates

- Reversing the National Insurance hike

- Reducing capital gains tax

- Implementing tax incentives for plant and machinery

- Allowing companies with CBILS and other coronavirus loans to pay them by means of investments in their businesses

- Ensuring big infrastructure investment (HS2, Wind farms, Pennine rail route etc) has a minimum 50% UK content’

- Providing energy support to high energy intensive UK industries

But where’s the money going to come from?

Already the treasury is reporting "excess” VAT income, but my argument would be that, even if borrowing is involved, this would be worthwhile. As the old adage goes, "You have to speculate to accumulate”.

The driver for this should be recognition of the effect that the orthodox view would have:

- Increase interest rates

- Create a recession

- Mass unemployment increasing calls on the public purse for Universal Credit

- High-interest rates leading to home repossessions and therefore greater demand on councils, which would be hobbled by the reduction in business rates due to the wave of insolvencies

- The insurance rate hike blew out of the water due to the fact public services would have to be curtailed significantly due to the demands of unemployment costs

- A reduced NHS, Police, Fire, Education Service

The only way to balance the books, is years of austerity.

The Treasury and BofE were wrong about inflation. If they follow the orthodox solution, they will present an existential threat to companies large and small throughout the UK.

The UK Steel Charter and the Future of British Manufacturing

In recent years, macroeconomic pressures such as energy costs, supply chain disruption, and sustainability mandates have pushed UK manufacturers to reconsider global sourcing. One initiative gaining traction is the UK Steel Charter (via Make UK), which encourages organisations to prioritise domestically produced steel.

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics shows that UK manufacturing production declined by 0.8% year-on-year in August 2025, following a 0.1% fall in July. While these figures point to ongoing challenges, they also highlight the importance of strengthening domestic supply chains to reduce external vulnerabilities.

Projects such as Sizewell C, which has pledged over £700 million in UK steel procurement, underscore how large-scale infrastructure investment can drive demand within domestic supply chains. (Referenced via public announcements around the Charter.)

What these stats mean for fasteners & component makers

For fastener and component manufacturers, policies such as the UK Steel Charter gain relevance when viewed against broader national steel and manufacturing trends:

The UK steel industry itself produces only a small share globally: in 2023, the UK produced 5.6 million tonnes of crude steel, which represented just 0.3 % of global output. House of Commons Library
The UK is heavily dependent on steel imports: in 2024, iron & steel imports were valued at around US $6.9 billion. Trading Economics
At the same time, domestic steel deliveries to the UK market declined substantially (a 28 % drop in producer deliveries) per the 2024 UK Steel Key Statistics report. UK Steel

These patterns highlight a strategic opening: fastener firms that can integrate traceable UK steel sources may stand out in bidding processes, reduce transport risk, and better manage supply volatility.

One more macro anchor: manufacturing accounts for about 8.8 % of UK economic output (GVA) in the first half of 2025. House of Commons Library. That scale means the manufacturing ecosystem, including fasteners, components, and downstream industries, has weight in the economy and is sensitive to shifts in steel policy, trade, and procurement.

Sustainability, regulation & long-term trends

Beyond economics, environmental and regulatory imperatives are reinforcing the case for domestic sourcing:

The UK government’s “steel strategy” policy documents note that 36,000 tonnes of steel in 2022–23 were used in public defence procurement, representing about 10 % of total public procurement by volume. GOV.UK
Domestic procurement reduces transport emissions and fosters closer collaboration throughout the supply chain, a benefit increasingly demanded by OEMs and public contracts as ESG (environmental, social, governance) criteria become stricter.

For fasteners in particular, traceability of material origin, certification of alloy makeup, and demonstrable sustainability credentials will likely gain importance in tender selection and customer trust.

As the industry continues to evolve, initiatives like the UK Steel Charter highlight the importance of collaboration, quality and resilience across every level of the supply chain. This is possible because we work with our customers to develop components for specific applications. Approximately 50% of our manufacturing program is given over to specials.

We are able to help customers when it comes to cost downs. This usually involves taking a turned part and converting it to a forged part; leading to a considerable saving in material. Cold forging is also a way of producing stronger piece parts, as the gain flow is not broken, unlike a turned part. On a broader scale, this year has been a rollercoaster for UK manufacturing, and despite slow growth projections, developments in investments and recruitment are building confidence levels among manufacturers. As we reach the halfway point of 2023, the reports of output decline and decreased new orders that muddied the waters of UK manufacturing at the start of the year, are mirrored in recent reports. Though this struggle is not new, the manufacturing initiatives that other countries are now rolling out are squeezing the sector further, leading to a heightened concern for British businesses in the global market.

The call for a viable industrial strategy has never been louder, and now manufacturers, unions and trade bodies are urging the Government to act.

Falling Short in the Global Race

It is feared that countries such as China, Germany and the US will continue to ‘one-up’ the UK due to their solid manufacturing plans which boast long-term growth and acknowledge the importance of industry as a contributing factor to a successful economy.

The Inflation Reduction Act from Joe Biden is subsiding $369bn worth of green investment which will boost manufacturing communities across America. This huge investment is now looming over the UK, with businesses at risk of being overshadowed.

The Emerging Trends In Post-Pandemic Manufacturing at Clevedon Fasteners

With the recent lifting of all COVID-19 restrictions in the UK now is the perfect time to look at the cause and effect the pandemic has created from a manufacturing perspective. Although regulations are diminished it is undeniable that the effects of the pandemic still linger and will continue to do so for years as we enter ‘the new normal’.

It has been almost 2 years since COVID-19 shook the world and forced us here at Clevedon Fasteners to re-assess the way we work. Here are a number of the ways we have adapted and grown in the face of change:

Our Primary Changes

The pandemic caused Clevedon Fasteners and many other manufacturers to change the traditional way of operating. The work from home mandate made a significant difference to the administration of many companies. At Clevedon Fasteners, we found this worked very well and the “new normal” is now a hybrid method of working.

Manufacturing simply cannot be done at home. As soon as employees were able to return to work in the manufacturing area, as well as adjust to the relevant restrictions, a new method of manufacturing and control was needed. This resulted in streamlining the organisation, to a very flat structure. Shop floor operatives took on many administrative and planning functions normally carried out by positions such as production and planning managers. These changes significantly improved communication planning.

It was also recognised very early on that Fridays were very unproductive compared with the other four days of the week. To rectify this Clevedon Fasteners first trialled and then adopted a four-day 12 hour week. These simple changes were driven by necessity but resulted in a 28% improvement in productivity and together with the administration changes have led to significant cost savings.

Employee Adaptation

For many years at Clevedon Fasteners, we have strived to facilitate a team working environment. Whilst we had always recognised the brilliance of our team throughout the business, the pandemic resulted in a “we are all in it together” spirit. This completely removed any feeling of “them and us” and resulted in organic problem solving which has created greater employee involvement and communication.

Furthermore, previous standard operating procedures were abandoned in favour of a regime built on trust rather than authority levels. For instance, customer information was shared as part of the planning process at the shop floor level, changeovers became more streamlined and employee satisfaction improved immensely.

A Drive Towards Sustainability

Sustainability has been propelled to the front of the business agenda with increasing responsibilities placed on companies by the government and consumers. The green agenda has moved out of the administration area (top down) to the shop floor level where it truly belongs and which has proven significantly more effective.

Increased Supply Chain Visibility

Due to the disruption, the pandemic caused to supply chains most businesses have now improved their supply chain risk management measures. The “we are all in it together” mentality was thus extended to our supply chain and customers. As supply chains struggled to come to terms with the re-start following the pandemic, the knowledge of a shipment’s location and timing became imperative.

The Governments Industrial Strategy: What This Means for Manufacturers

On 23 June, the government announced what many in UK manufacturing have been waiting years to hear. For the first time since 2017, a fresh industrial strategy is on the table. Not only will it cut energy costs for manufacturers by 25%, but it also includes a £4 billion injection into the British Business Bank. This is a move set to significantly improve access to finance for businesses across the country.

From 2027, over 7,000 manufacturers that are electricity-intensive can expect to see their overall electricity bills cut by up to 25%, all thanks to the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme. Fastening the Future: How UK Manufacturing Shields Customers from the 2026 "Carbon Tax"

As of January 1, 2026, the industrial landscape for fasteners and assembly solutions has fundamentally shifted. The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has officially moved into its "Definitive Phase." As we discussed in our previous look at how nearshoring overcomes global instability, CBAM is no longer just about paperwork; it’s a real financial reality that is reshaping global supply chains.

At Clevedon Fasteners, it is now clear that for businesses reliant on iron and steel fasteners, the data attached to each part is now as valuable as the metal itself.

The Default Value Penalty

A "Default Value" is a figure that the CBAM enforces if importers fail to prove exactly how much carbon was emitted during manufacturing. This value is set as a worst-case scenario. According to the latest GOV.UK guidance, 2026 marks the enforcement of a 10% markup on these default values a move designed to eliminate guesswork and force the provision of real, verified data.

Moving from Defaults to “Actuals”

To avoid the default tax, a CBAM report must provide three specific “Actual” figures supported by a verified monitoring plan. At Clevedon Fasteners, we track these metrics at the source of production:

Actual Direct Emissions: The carbon generated by our UK factory during production.
Actual Indirect Emissions: The carbon footprint of the electricity used to power our facility.
Precursor Data: The verified carbon footprint of the raw materials used to create the finished product.

The 2026 Verification Logjam

The National Competent Authorities now require every CBAM declaration to be signed by an Accredited Independent Auditor. As of January 1, 2026, self-reporting is no longer legally sufficient. This has created a global “Logjam” where overseas suppliers are stuck in verification queues for 6–8 months.

Futureproofing for the UK CBAM (2027)

While EU regulations are already tight, UK businesses must also prepare for the UK’s own CBAM, launching on January 1, 2027. With no learning phase, businesses must ensure their tracking is set up properly now to avoid a chaotic first year of fines.

Cold Forging Basics

Riveting is one of the oldest forms of fastening. You will have seen rivets hidden in plain site on bridges, ships, Aircraft and Trucks to name a few common applications. They are also common throughout your home, if you have double glazing then you will probably have our rivets in the hinges

Rivets are formed by a process called Cold Forging, this process produces no waste as the head of the rivet is formed by upsetting the shank of the rivet. This ensures the grain flow of the material remains in-tact thus strengthening the fastener.

The most recent development in Riveting is the self-piercing rivet, where you do not need a hole in order to rivet two materials together. This process is now commonplace in state-of-the-art automotive manufacturing plants.

Industry Update: The Recent Ups and Downs of UK Manufacturing

The S&P Global UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose in July to 52.1 from 50.9 in June which is the highest figure since the middle of 2022. With this new high, British manufacturers have been able to breathe a sigh of relief.

In the same month however, Make UK published an analysis which found that the UK had fallen out of the global top 10 of the largest manufacturing economies, a position which hasn’t been seen since 2012.

With this rollercoaster of figures, positives and negatives have been identified which give insight into the future of UK manufacturing.

Output Growth and the Increase of New Orders

Of the variables which make up the PMI, output and new orders were noted as major contributors to the high figure. The majority of those surveyed also noted that they have forecast further output rises due to increases in new business and innovative product launches.

After a few years of economic uncertainty, factors such as the general election and improved customer demand have also instilled confidence amongst British manufacturers, creating an aura of optimism.

Employment Figures Rise

Workforces in the services sector recorded a significant rise while in other sectors, figures have stabilised which is contrary to the drops in employment which have been experienced over the past 2 years.

This figure goes hand in hand with the growth in output as it appears employee shortages are easing. Make UK also reported that manufacturing jobs are providing higher salaries with the average £38,769 salary exceeding the wider economy average of £35,404.

Global Position Falls

As previously mentioned, the UK has fallen out of the top 10 manufacturing nations, being surpassed by Mexico and Russia. The USA, China and Germany sit within the top 4 nations, and it’s no coincidence that these countries have bolstered long-term industrial strategies.

The UK’s lack of industrial strategy will become more visible in global lists and this is the reason for change amongst policy makers. The PMI increase indicates that manufacturers are working hard to build new business and create a strong workforce. Therefore, with further governmental support, these efforts could benefit the UK’s global ranking.

In the run up to their appointment, Labour had expressed commitment to a modern industrial strategy, and experts now note that this new strategy should go beyond 2030 to set out robust actions. This will not only benefit UK manufacturers but also the general economy.

With the election still fresh and heightened lobbying from manufacturers, the manufacturing landscape may be set to change.

The Journey of Clevtec

Clevedon Fasteners — 22/10/2018

In 2008 when the world stopped due to the financial crash, we had to re evaluate our business model as we realised that if people didn’t want the fasteners we manufactured at Clevedon, we were pretty much sunk. as a result we created Clevtec. Clevtec is a trading arm of Clevedon Fasteners Ltd and unlike Clevedon who are a purely a manufacturing entity, Clevtec is able to buy and sell product all over the world, as long as it made a return. This meant that as well as fasteners, Clevtec could venture into other parts of the fastener market, that we were unable to make at Clevedon.

Clevtec soon found that there was a latent demand of high quality threaded fasteners, particularly if they were of UK origin and so in 2012 we purchased a company called Blakeacre who specialised in high quality threaded fasteners and they became part of Clevtec. In addition to threaded fasteners, Clevtec over the years has got into Commercial Vehicle brake shoe platforms and various types of Setting machines, the latest of which being spin riveters.

Clevtec’s latest market offering is a range of services that we believe our existing an new customers will find of interest. Over the past year we have been developing with a selected number of existing customers, two specific services

With the date of the 1st January 2021 looming, we are all aware there will be many changes to the way we do things as a business due to Brexit. Many of our orders are shipped out at our borders, where there is likely going to be a little chaos for a while whilst the country gets used to the new processes of trading with the EU.

As a new year begins, the world of advanced computing and smart technology continues to rise in everything we do (including in the manufacturing sector). However, as we are distracted by the new bells and whistles, we sometimes forget what fundamentals our products and materials need to have to work effectively.

To better understand how fasteners continue to shape modern manufacturing, we explore their evolution from early origins through to today’s advanced applications and future innovations.

3000 - 2000 BC: Bronze Age Rivets

Archaeologists found that Egyptians would use their version of rivets to fix in place materials for weapons and tools like spears, blades and handles for pots. Their technique was to hammer metal into pre-drilled holes and then deform the ends, giving the rivet the name of one of the oldest fastener types.

1500 – 500 BC: Wedges and Cotter-style Fastenings

The use of wedge and peg-fastening, used from materials such as wood and soft metals, began to be used to secure things such as timber beams, spokes and hubs (for early wheels) and boats. The civilisation of Egypt, Mesopotamia and the East Mediterranean would rely on these by rolling on the friction of the two materials holding them together.

1200 BC – 400 AD: Early Iron Nails and Spikes

The use of iron was large enough to lead to the development of both forged nails and spikes across Europe, the Mediterranean and the Roman world. Used to hold things such as flooring, roofing structures and doors together, these components were driven directly into materials before drilling holes beforehand, meaning the grip held together stronger and gave more versatility than rivets or wedges for that time.
